Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the self-confidence promotion program on knowledge and confidence levels in smoking cessation counseling of nursing students. The samples were 30 nursing students. Research instrument was self-confidence promotion program. The data collection was performed through questionnaires regarding smoking cessation counseling knowledge and self-confidence in smoking cessation counselling. The content validity was .95 and .98 and tested by 3 experts. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation and paired t-test.

The results showed that the mean score of students’ knowledge and self-confidence in smoking cessation counseling after receiving the program was higher than before receiving the program, with the significance level of .05. This demonstrated that the activities increased students’ knowledge and self-confidence in smoking cessation counseling and they should receive the self-confidence building program before delivering smoking cessation counseling. Therefore, educational institutions should strengthen self-confidence among nursing students before delivering smoking cessation counseling.
