Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus during COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract
This descriptive research aimed to study and compare the glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The samples were 96 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus at ≥ 18 years and their primary caregivers at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. The instruments included a questionnaire about personal data, self-management of diabetes and HbA1c record form. The content validity was tested by three experts. The content validity index (CVI) was 1.00. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, One-Way Repeated ANOVA, and McNemar test.
The findings revealed a continuous increase of HbA1c (Before the lockdowns = 8.50%, and during the first and the second lockdown = 8.61% and 8.94%, respectively). HbA1c between the second lockdown and before the lockdowns, as well as, the rate of uncontrolled blood sugar level between the second lockdown and the first lockdown showed a statistically significant difference. It was thus recommended undertaking further studies on the causes and factors influencing the glycemic control under emerging infectious disease situation to plan a suitable care for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
