Abstract

The descriptive correlational study aimed to examine the associations between sexual quality of life and a range of factors including age, length of postoperative period, sexual knowledge, communication with spouse, sexual response, and function capacity in post coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. A sample of 132 post CABG patients at least three months without cognitive impairment and passing screening test for a six-minute walk test was recruited from an university hospital. The questionnaires were used for data collection consisting of demographic data, sexual knowledge, dyadic sexual communication, sexual response of men and women, function capacity, and male and female sexual quality of life. The content validity (CVI = .81 - .98) and Reliability (α = .76 - .99). Descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation were applied.

The results demonstrated that the sexual quality of life score was 44.94 out of 100 (S.D = 21.85). Sexual knowledge, sexual communication, and sexual response was statistically significant correlation with sexual quality of life (r = .176, p-value < .05, .387, p-value < .001 and .222, p-value < .01 respectively). Therefore, nurses should give precedence to develop their patients’ sexual wisdom (comprehensive knowledge and interactive sexual skills) for promoting patients’ sexual quality of life after CABG.
