Abstract

The descriptive research aimed to examine the medication use behavior of 203 non-communicable disease patients in Bang Talad Tambon Health Promoting Hospital’s area of responsibility and randomized by their house numbers. ‘The 9-month data collection was performed through questionnaire about demographic and drug self-administration behavior having the content validity at .83 and the reliability by Cronbach’s coefficient alpha at .77, as well as behavioral observation, environmental survey, and measurement of medication storage temperature. Data were analyzed to frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation.

The study found that most of the NCD patients were elders. Patients' and caregivers’ drug use behaviors were 1) drug arrangement: patients arranging their daily medications 14.78%, 2) drug administration: patients checking expiry date before taking medicine 58.13% and adjusting the time for taking medication by themselves 36.95%, 3) drug seeking patients using herbal or complementary medicine 29.56%, and 4) drug storage: from the survey on environmental and temperature measurements of medical storage such as in the cupboard, on the dining table, or in the car, almost all locations were over 30 degrees 93.60% ( gif.latex?\bar{x} = 32.60, S.D = 2.10) which might affect drug efficiency. Therefore, the research results can be used as suggestions on appropriate medication use behaviors among patients and their caregivers in general practice. Moreover, to reduce drug degradation, physicians should consider prescribing less amount of medicine, in case the patients misplace their medicines or cannot store them properly.
