Abstract

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 or Covid-19 affects the health problems of people from all walks of life, especially those who are vulnerable, namely the elderly, chronic patients, and women in pregnancy, postpartum period, and neonates. The impacts of Covid-19 to maternal and neonatal outcomes that should be considered are transmission from the community to mothers, vertically transmitted infection during pregnancy, and infection from mothers to neonates during pregnancy, intrapartum, and postpartum period. Because Covid-19 is an emerging infectious disease, up until now, multiple studies have been released continuously, extremely, and astonishingly with the results that found no vertically transmitted infection. Instead, there are often infections in the postpartum period, especially, activities that need to be closer to the babies, such as breastfeeding. However, the research found that breastmilk in the symptomatic period of the infected mothers contains specific immunity to COVID-19(IgG). Therefore, Breastfeeding promotion is another way to prevent and mitigate neonatal infections. This article aims to present nursing intervention for breastfeeding promotion in mothers suspected of, or infected with Covid-19 by using the family- centered maternity care concept, the 10-step to successful breastfeeding, World Health Organization Guidelines, and up-to-date evidence about the COVID-19 virus on breastfeeding to provide care for mothers and neonates in the suitable context of each health care setting or individual is an optional framework for nursing.
