Abstract

The quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of a dementia prevention program in elderly people at risk aged 60 - 69 years old. The 56 subjects were elderly club members from two health promoting hospitals. The experimental group was randomly about 27 subjects. They received the program based on the Protection Motivation Theory for seven weeks. This included proving education, watching video, doing risk assessment of dementia, sharing experience of brain training with relaxation, and encouraging dementia prevention behavior by a group activity for three times and one telephone visiting. For the control group was 29 subjects who received a usual care. Data were collected at the 1st, 4th, and 7th week by using questionnaires based on the Protection Motivation Theory the content validity and reliability were .96 and .92 respectively. Descriptive statistics, Independent t-test and Repeated measure one - way ANOVA were employed for data analysis.

The research results revealed that the mean scores of perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, response-efficacy, self-efficacy and health promotion behavior of the experimental group both at the 4th week and at the 7th week were significantly higher than those at pre-test and higher than those of the comparison group (p-value < .05). The results of this study could be applied to prevent dementia for the elderly in community or the elderly club based on community context.
