Factors Related to Research Competency of Registered Nurse in Public Health Center, Health Department, Bangkok Metropolis

Abstract

          This cross-sectional study aimed to examine factors that were related to research competency of registered nurses working in Public Health Center, Health Department of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration using competency model of Spencer and Spencer. Two hundred twenty-eight registered nurses were selected through proportion stratified random sampling, and data were collected using the self– administered questionnaires. Research instruments comprised of three parts; the personal data, support in research and research competency. Content validity of all research instruments were verified by three experts, and the reliability of questionnaires were established with Cronbach’s coefficient alpha between .94 and .97. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s productmoment correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis with the level of significance equal to .05.


          The study results were as follows: The research competency of registered nurses working in Public Health Center, Health Department of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration was at a moderate level (x̄ = 3.00, S.D = .70). Factors significantly predicting research competency of registered nurses working in Public Health Center, Health Department of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration were education, support in research, research experience, age and research training experience. These predictors together explained the total 46.30 percent of variance. The recommendations from this study are the Public Health Nursing Division and Public Health Center support registered nurses to receive further education at the master’s level, and provide support in research competency, support for more research experience, and support for various research training workshops.
