Abstract
In applying the art therapy to the older persons, the objectives should be set relative to their problems and conditions. Their physical and psychological
limitations, moods, and communicative skills should also be taken into account. Moreover, a good relationship between the art therapists and the elderly should serve as a fundamental part in proceeding the therapy. The elderly are encouraged to freely release their emotions, balance their lives, and express themselves through the art therapeutic processes. Common obstacles in practicing therapeutic art and art therapy with elders are cultural concepts and particular way the elders perceive art. The concept of art as a childish non-productive activity usually prevents Thai older adults from engaging themselves in art activities. Fear of changes, additionally, impedes them to explore new adventure or experimentation during art making process. Moreover, they usually expect a formal and functional result of the activity they are engaged to. In other words, they are unfamiliar with doing something freely without expecting any respectable outcomes. Concerning the cultural aspect of art in Thailand, the process of therapeutic art and art therapy for the Thai elders must be flexible. Providing background knowledge of art and warming-up time should be included in the process. The therapist should also respect the decision making of the elders as well as their dignity as a human being.
