The Effect of Empowerment Program on Self-Care Behaviors in the Older Persons with Chronic Kidney Disease Receiving Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to test the effect of empowerment program on self – care behaviors in older persons with chronic kidney disease receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Forty participants were recruited form CAPD clinic, BuangKarn hospital. Each group was composed of 20 older persons with chronic kidney disease receiving CAPD. They were matched pair by sex, age, and duration of receiving CAPD. The control group received conventional nursing care while the experimental group received empowerment program in additional to conventional nursing care. The data were collected using was self – care behaviors scale which was approved content validity by five experts, obtaining a CVI of .96 and acceptable reliability at 0.81. Data were analyzed using descriptive and t – test. The research findings can be summarized as followed: 1) After participating in the empowerment program, the mean score of self – care behaviors in the older persons with chronic kidney disease receiving CAPD was significantly higher than that before participating in the program. (p < .05) 2) After receiving the empowerment program, the mean score of self – care behaviors in the older persons with chronic kidney disease receiving CAPD was significantly higher than participants receiving usual care. (p <.05)This research finding showed that the empowerment program given could increase
self – care behaviors score in the older persons with chronic kidney disease receiving CAPD. Findings suggested that nurses should promote empowerment insight patients for proper improvement of self-care behaviors of chronic kidney disease patients.
