Abstract

The descriptive research design aimed to compare descrepancies in weight estimates of gestating fetuses between calculations by using Johnson’s Formula and Dare’s Formula . The sample was 72 pregnant women admitted to delivery rooms at a general hospital. Purposive sampling was used to select the sample group. Data collection employed the Gestating Fetus Weight Estimate Data Record Form examined for content validity by three qualified experts. The descrepancy score was 0.90, 0.92, 0.96. The instrumentation used in the study was tested in 10 subject with characteristics similar to the sample in order to determine discrepancies in the data collection of the researcher and the research assistant. The descrepancy score was 95 percent. Data analysis was conducted by using descriptive statistics and the t-test.

The research finding revealed that. The mean discrepancy in the estimated weight of gestating fetuses as measured by Dare’s Formula was less than the discrepancy in the estimated weight of the gestating fetuses calculated by using Johnson’s Formula with statistically significant differences (p < .00). The recommendations from this study are the Dare’s Formula should be adopted as a procedure in nursing practice to provide information in planning nursing activities and determining suitable delivery methods for pregnant mothers, while enhancing nursing effectiveness during the intrapartum period and lowering the incidence of birth complications.
