Factor analysis of Empathy Inventory for Nursing Students

The purpose of this research was to factor analyses empathy inventory for nursing students. The sample group consists of 200 fourth-year undergraduate nursing students in nursing college from the Faculty of Nursing, Praboromarajchanok Institute. The instrument is a scale measuring empathy with 7 levels. Data analysis includes exploratory factor analysis using SPSS and confirmatory factor analysis using LISREL.
The research results were as follows: 1) empathy for nursing students consists of three factors and 20 indicators including the perspective taking, compassionate care, and ability to stand in patients’ shoes. 2) the factors of empathy for nursing students had been developed was consistent well fitted with the empirical data. The factor analysis showed that the factor loadings of ability to stand in patients’ shoes factor, perspective taking factor, and compassionate care factor were equal to .97, .77 and .32, respectively. Cronbach alpha coefficient was .68.
In summary, this empathy inventory for nursing students has appropriate validity and reliability and it can be used to measure empathy among nursing students.
