A Public Mass Shooting Survival Guidelines for Nurses

In 2020, public mass shootings in Thailand occurred consecutively twice within two months. Many people were injured, dead, and lost their properties. Recently, public mass shootings in Thailand occur more often than in the past. The purpose of this article is to provide nurse, a guideline to survive and help others to survive a public mass shooting that occurs in public places, such as stadiums and shopping centers.
The contents of this article include the incidence of public mass shootings in other countries and Thailand, the RUN, HIDE, and FIGHT survival protocols to survive the shooting and the Avoid – Deny – Defend – Treat strategies, which better fits the situations that occur in a hospital. Moreover, the article presents the benefits of active shooter training and drills and a simulation-based training case study from the United States of American as well as suggestions for nurses to prepare themselves to survive the shooting, while they are also responsible for caring injured patients in the hospital. Furthermore, the article recommends that organizations should consider developing a plan to prepare their staff for active shootings.
