Developing guidelines for promoting breastfeeding in postpartum mothers of the lactation clinic Chiang Kham Hospital, Phayao Province

Abstract

Introduction : Breast milk is the best food for babies. The primigravidarum should be encouraged and prepared to breastfeed during the antenatal period for cognitive development in each individual, which leads to successful breastfeeding in primigravidarum.

Methods : This is a quasi-experimental research which compared the results of knowledge, behavior and skills of breastfeeding before and after using the new guidelines for promoting breastfeeding in postpartum primigravidarum at gestational age of 32 weeks or more, 58 cases were participated in this research from February 27, 2020 to February 26, 2021. The tool was consisted of the assessment form of knowledge, behavior and skills of breastfeeding. The data is analyzed by statistics Paired T- test and The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

Results : After using the new guidelines for promoting breastfeeding in postpartum primigravidarum. The nurses, pregnant women and relatives were participated in planning and supporting of breastfeeding since antenatal to postpartum period. Moreover, there are assessment and follow up treatment at lactation clinic. The results reveal that the mean scores of breastfeeding knowledge are significantly increased from 17.31 to 19.36 (P < 0.001). The mean scores of breastfeeding behavior are significantly increased from 29.58 to 67.29 (P < 0.001). The mean scores of breastfeeding skill are significantly increased from 6.5 to 9.57 (P < 0.001).

Conclusion : The new guidelines for promoting breastfeeding in postpartum primigravidarum should be utilized in Chiang Kham Hospital.
