Abstract
Cardioplegia solution administered via coronary artery is the gold standard for myocardial protection during open heart surgery. This retrospective study aims to study the outcomes of custodial cardioplegia (CPG) compared with blood CPG for patients after double heart valve surgery. The participants were patients undergoing double heart valve surgery, received custodiol CPG or blood CPG, aged over 15 years and at Naresuan University hospital in Phitsanulok province from 2015 to 2021. The participants were selected specifically according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research instruments were a general information questionnaire and a surgical information questionnaire. The results showed that the participants were 24 patients who had double heart valve surgery. The 15 patients received custodiol CPG were severe valve stenosis (6 patients) and double valve replacement (8 patients). The nine patients who received blood CPG had severe valve stenosis (6 patients) and both valve repair and valve replacement (4 patients). The use of pacemakers (no patients) and hospital length of stay (22.3±9.1days) for patients who received custodiol CPG were significantly lower than the patients who received blood CPG (3 patients) and hospital length of stay (32.3±30.2 days), (p<0.02, p<0.02), respectively. In conclusion, the patients who received custodiol CPG did not have postoperative pacemaker usage and the length of their hospital stay was less than those of the patients who received blood CPG.
