Objectives: To study the prevalence of depression in Thai patients with spinal cord lesion (SCL) at Srinagarind Hospital, a tertiary care center in the Northeast of Thailand.
Study design: Descriptive study
Setting: Srinagarind hospital, Thailand
Subjects: Thirty-six Thai patients with SCL
Methods: Used the Thai Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Thai HADS) questionnaire and the Khon Kaen University Depression Inventory (KKU-DI) to assess depression; and the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) version III to assess functions; and recorded demographics data.
Results: Mean age was 42 (SD 15.8) years (range 16-79 years). There were 75% males and 25% females. Mean SCIM score was 63.83 (SD 21.8) points. Prevalent rates of depression were 5.6% (Thai-HADS score > 7) and 22.2% (KKU-DI score 30). There was moderate correlation between the 2 screening instruments (r=0.684, p<0.001). Cause of SCL was significantly associated with depression (p<0.005). Others such as age, gender, occupation, income, spinal lesion and functional level had no association with depression.
Conclusion: According to the Thai-HADS and the KKU=DI, depression prevalent rates were 5.6% and 22.2% respectively. Only cause of spinal cord lesion was correlated with depression.
