The Effect of a Parental Role Support Program on Reducing Anxiety in School-Aged Children Undergoing Anesthesia for Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Abstract

Background: School-age children undergoing anesthesia for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy often experience preoperative anxiety, which may negatively affect cooperation, recovery, and overall surgical outcomes. Parental support, grounded in social support theory, has been recognized as a potential approach to reduce anxiety and enhance children’s sense of security.

Objective: To examine the effects of a parental role support program on reducing anxiety among school-age children undergoing anesthesia for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

Material and Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 54 school-age children and their parents, equally assigned to an experimental group (n = 27) and a control group (n = 27). The experimental group received the parental role support program in addition to routine nursing care, whereas the control group received routine care only. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and paired t-test.

Results: After the intervention, anxiety levels in the experimental group significantly decreased compared with their pretest scores. Furthermore, post-intervention anxiety levels in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group. The program, developed based on social support theory, enhanced emotional, informational, and appraisal support, contributing to increased feelings of security and reduced fear and anxiety before and after surgery.

Conclusion: The parental role support program was effective in reducing anxiety among school-age children undergoing surgery. The findings support the integration of family-centered nursing interventions to promote psychological well-being and improve the quality of pediatric perioperative care.
