Development of a Care Model for Dependent Elderly Individuals Through the Participation of a Civil Volunteer Network

Abstract

Background: Caring for dependent elderly individuals through community volunteer networks is a crucial mechanism for enhancing volunteer capabilities in proactive healthcare tailored to local contexts. This collaboration improves quality of life and reduces complications in the elderly through sustainable community-level cooperation.

Objectives: To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a care model for dependent elderly individuals through community volunteer participation in the service area of Banbagoibadea Sub-district Health Promotion Hospital, Yala Province.

Material and Method: This developmental research involved 64 village health volunteers and 30 dependent elderly individuals. Instruments included a general information questionnaire, a knowledge test, a participation questionnaire, a practical skills assessment, and a health outcome record. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.

Results: The BB Volunteer Care Model resulted in significantly higher average scores in knowledge, practical skills, and participation compared to pre-participation levels at a significance level of .001. Practical skills showed the greatest improvement with a mean of 4.65 and a standard deviation of 0.32. Regarding elderly health outcomes, the average score for activities of daily living increased from 7.20 to 8.50. The risk of depression decreased from 12.40 percent to 3.20 percent, while consistency in physical therapy increased from 40.0 percent to 92.5 percent, all significant at the .05 level. Additionally, no new pressure ulcers were reported following the implementation of the model.

Conclusion: The developed model effectively promotes community-based elderly care, enhances volunteer safety and skills, and provides sustainable positive impacts on the physical and mental health of the elderly.
