Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of cleansing agents on retention of O-rings in Khaw-Aroy implants. 48  ethylene propylene O-rings were divided into 4 groups (n=12). Each group was inserted and removed from ball attachment 3 times vertically by universal testing machine with 50 millimeters per minute at crosshead speed for insertion and removal simulation of overdenture at least 3 times a day. Different groups were immersed in water (control group), 1:10 dilution of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution, 1:6 dilution of 5% vinegar, and alkaline peroxide solution, repeated 90 times for 3 months daily use. Retentive forces were tested by study of means of maximum tensile forces using universal testing machine. The result revealed that means of maximum tensile forces of different cleansing agents were statistically significantly different (p<0.001) and decreasing by time. Sodium hypochlorite solution and alkaline peroxide solution decreased retentive forces of the O-rings rather than control group all interval of immersions. Alkaline peroxide solution had least retentive force among the experimental groups since the first month immersion while the retentive force of vinegar group had been showed no significant differece from that of control group (p>0.05).
