Prevalence and Risk Factors of Dental Erosion in Deciduous Teeth in Khon Kaen Municipality, Thailand
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aims of this cross-sectional study were to determine the prevalence and risk factor of dental erosion in deciduous teeth among 4-6 years old children attending schools in Khon Kaen Municipality, Khon Kaen. The children were selected using stratified random sampling by type and size of school. Research instruments included dental erosion form and questionnaire. Dentists examined dental erosion in the children and interviewed caregivers via telephone based on a structured questionnaire. Statistical analyses were calculated using percentage, mean, standard deviation, Fisher’s Exact test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05. The results from 284 children showed that the prevalence of dental erosion in deciduous teeth was 2.8%. There was no association of personal factors, health factors, oral health factors and lifestyle factors with dental erosion in deciduous teeth. Regarding dietary factors, it was found that breast milk feeding longer than 12 months significantly increased the risk for dental erosion in deciduous teeth (Odds ration = 4.4, 95% Confidence interval = 1.0-19.0, p-value = 0.04). In conclusion, the prevalence of dental erosion in primary teeth is low. Duration of breast milk feeding is associated with increased risk of dental erosion in deciduous teeth. The observed association could as well due to uncontrolled confounding factors or chance. Further study is therefore needed to confirm these findings.
