Remission and Recovery in the Treatment of Schizophrenia

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objective: To review literatures about the concepts of remission and recovery in the treatment of schizophrenia and how they are applied.
Methods: Reviewer used key words “schizophrenia, remission and recovery” to retrieve articles that published from 2001 to 2011. The electronic data source used in this review
were Pubmed for English articles and ThaiLIS for Thai articles. Thirty-four articles were selected a rid reviewed.
Results: Remission criteria proposed by the Remission in Schizophrenia Working Group (RSWG) is valid and easy to use. Item P1, P2, P3, G5, G9, N1, N4 and N6 of PANSS scale can be used to assess state of remission. The remission criteria were applied
in 3 groups of literature. First, in studying about remission rate, that ranged from 12-76%. Second, in studying related with predictors of remission in first episode schizophrenia are (a) shorter duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), (b) early treatment response and
(c) adherence to medication. Finally, course of remission, literature showed that state of remission correlated with better premorbid adjustment, good treatment adherence, improvement of depressive symptoms and social cognitive function. At present, there is
no consensus on recovery criteria. Conclusion: The RSWG remission criteria can be applied to study treatment outcome of
schizophrenia in Thailand by adapting eight items from the Thai version of Positive and Negative Syndrome of Schizophrenia scale (PANSS-T).
