Association between Emotional Quotient and High-school Academic Achievement (Ordinary National Educational Test and Test of Medical School Group of Thailand Scores) of the First Year Medical Students of a Medical School in Bangkok.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objectives: To study the relationship between E.Q. level and high-school academic achievement (Ordinary National Educational Test and Test of Medical School Group of Thailand Scores) among the
first year medical students from a medical school in Bangkok.
Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study of the first year medical students from a medical school in Bangkok by using the E.Q. evaluation form for Thai people aged 12-60 years which developed by the Department of Mental Health; Ministry of Public Health, the grade 12 O-NET score which is a basic national test (category 4)
and the scores of the test from the medical school group in Thailand in the academic year 2011. The data was collected from May to June, 2011 and was analysed by comparing the sample’s E.Q.
score to the normal score of Thai civilian aged 18-25. Data analysis used means, standard deviation and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Result: The medical students have E.Q. level of these aspects in the normal range ; empathy (84.48%), responsibility (87.36%), motivation (83.91%), judgment (81.03%), relationship (75.86%), proud (86.78%), satisfaction (83.33%), peaceful (85.06%), but the aspect of self-control is higher than normal (62.64%). There was statistical significant about correlation between all aspects of E.Q. levels and the high-school academic achievement (p<0.01). The correlation between the aspect of motivation, judgment, empathy, responsibility and high-school grades are 0.163, 0.188 (p<0.05), 0.256 and 0.220 (p<0.01) respectively. However, there was neither correlation between the E.Q. level and student’s grade in primary school nor secondary school level Furthermore, the E.Q. level was negative correlate with the number of tutorial hours in high-school level which the relation coefficient is -0.156 and -0.194 in relationship and peaceful aspect respectively (p<0.05) and -0.212 in satisfaction aspect (p<0.01).
Summary: The first year medical students have a normal range E.Q. level and higher than normal in aspect of self-control. Higher level of all aspects of the E.Q. level related to higher high-school academic
achievement. Higher level of E.Q. in the aspect of motivation, judgment, empathy, responsibility related to higher grade in high-school. On the other hand, the relationship, peaceful and satisfaction aspect of E.Q. are significantly negative related to the number of tutorial hours in high-school level.
