Self-Compassion in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Associated Factors
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: 1) To explore self-compassion in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 2) to examine the relations among self-compassion and related factors.
Method: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in 10- to 18-year-old children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD by psychiatrist and residents at outpatient department of Psychiatry, Ramathibodi hospital. Three questionnaires were utilized in this study including a demographic data questionnaire, the self-compassion scale (SCS), and the inventory of parental attachment and peer attachment- Revised (IPPA-R). Data were analyzed using chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analyses.
Results: This study included 175 participants, of whom 132 were male. The average age of the participants was 14.06 years. According to correlation coefficient analysis, the self-compassion score was found to be positively correlated with age (r = .248), the total score of parental attachment (r = .279), the trust subscale (r = .341), communication subscale (r = .163) and negatively correlated with alienation subscale (r = -.181). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analyses revealed that parental attachment (B = .013 (.005 -.021), p = 0.002) remained associated with self-compassion in children and adolescents with ADHD.
Conclusion: The research identified factors associated with self-compassion in children and adolescents with ADHD. Further studies should investigate the effects of promoting parental attachment on self-compassion.
