Abstract
Objective : To review the literature and collected the current body of knowledge about
risk factors and theories associated with suicide in adolescence.
Methods : A narrative reviews of the literature was selected from electronic databases.
This focused on the objective of reviewing evaluating the level of evidence, synthesis
and summarizing to the body of current knowledge
Results : Risk factors associated with suicide in adolescence consisting of depression,
schizophrenia, anxiety, previous attempted suicide, personality traits, drug abuse, living
in poor attachment family, parental history of suicide attempts, low self-esteem, stressful
life events, using inappropriate coping strategies. These factors are different in gender.
The theories of suicide in adolescents including Erikson’s theory, the rational-suicide
theory, the ecological perspective approach suicide theory and family system theory
Conclusion : Understanding about risk factors and theories associated with suicide in
adolescence are important. It should be integrated, appropriate and responsive service
suicide prevention programs to adolescents who at risk of suicide and concern with
different context of local area.
