factors in adult schizophrenic patients at Siriraj Hospital.
Method : Participants were schizophrenic patients according to diagnostic criteria
ICD-10 who treated at inpatient and outpatient units, Department of Psychiatry, Siriraj
Hospital during 1 December 2012 to 1 December 2013. This study was conducted by
using the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies Thai version (Th-DIGS) and Thai
version of SCAN (Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry) which used
to diagnose nicotine dependence. Data was analyzed by using percentage, mean,
standard deviations, chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test.
Results : A total of 350 adult schizophrenic patients (193 females and 157 males), the
prevalence of nicotine dependence was 16.9%. Male gender, unemployment status
and education level below bachelor’s degree were correlated with nicotine dependence
statistically significantly (p < 0.05).
Conclusion : Prevalence of nicotine dependence was 16.9% of patients with
schizophrenia. These findings support the importance of assessment, monitoring and
management for nicotine dependence in patients with schizophrenia.
