Effect of Psychoeducation Program in Patients with Depressive Disorder

Abstract

Objective : To evaluate the effect of psychoeducation program in patients with unipolar depressive disorder at the OPD psychiatric unit in Srinagarind Hospital
Method : A quasiexperiment, one group pre and post study design was conducted, Twelve patients with unipolar depressive disorder were recruited at the outpatient psychiatric unit in Srinagarind Hospital during May, 2016 - September, 2016, Four weeks psychoeducation program was conducted by a psychiatric nurse. Each session took 60-90 minutes contents
included; 1) the knowledge of clinical features and course of unipolar depressive disorder 2) positive thinking and negative thinking management, 3) communication skills 4) self care management and social supports accessibility. Primary outcome measure used the 9 item-patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), Thai version, test of knowledge about unipolar depressive disorder and questionnaire for medication adherence. Descriptive statistics were used for demographic. Inferential statistic were used to compare mean score difference of PHQ-9, knowledge test, and medication adherence during baseline, end of the program and
at 3 months follow up by using.
Results : The mean score difference during baseline, end of program and 3 month follow-up of depression were 12.9, 7.5 and 8.0, of the knowledge were 12.0,14.9 and 14.6 and of the medical adherence were 5.8,7.1 and 7.6 respectively.
Conclusion : The psychoeducation program can helped patients to improve the level of knowledge about unipolar depressive disorder with statisctically significant (p<0.01) but was no statistical significant on depressive score and medication adherence score (p=0.073 and 0.069 respectively).
