The Effects of Vitamin K1 on Vitamin K-Dependent Factors Synthesis in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract

Abstract : Objective : To determine the effects of vitamin K, on vitamin K-dependent factors synthesis in patients with liver cirrhosis.
Design : Quasiexperimental study Setting : Phramongkutklao Hospital Patients : Twenty-four patients with biobsy-proven liver cirhosis had a mean age 53:33 + 23 76 years (range 35-84), The male to female ratio was 2:1. One patients was in Child class A. Eight patients were in Child class B and 15 patients were in Child class C.  Intervention : Patients were given vitamin K 30 mg intravenously. Blood samples were taken before the infusion, 24 and 72 hours after the infusion and determined for prothrombin time (PT) with international normalized ratio (IVR), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), coagulation factor assay for factors VIIIII IX, X, protein total protein S and free protein S.  Results : In patients with Child class Band C liver cimhosis the value of PT. INR. APT. IT and vitamin K-dependent factors before, 24 and 72 hours were not significantly diferent (p 0.05). Conclusion : Administration of vitamin K cannot induce vitamin K-dependent factors synthesis or correct the abnormal coagulogram in patients with Child class B and C liver cirrhosis.
