Abstract: A major requirement of blood transfusion therapy is to preserve red blood cells in vitro so so that they survive and function throughout the storage time. Previous reports showed that whole blood in citrate phosphate dextrose (CPD) is preserved for 21 days. National Blood Centre (NBC), Thai Red Cross Society started manufacturing citrate phosphate dextrose adenine -1 (CPDA-1) blood bags, extending the shelf life of whole blood up to 35 days in order to reduce wastage due to lating of a product. This study provides the comparative quality of blood preser containing anticoagulant CPDA-1 solution from NBC (TB: 40 bags) and importe bags) by means of determination of biochemical properties from day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and respectively. In TB, the biochemical characteristics changed from day O to day 35: plasma hemoglobin 2.39 mg/al to 77.62 mg/dL, percentage of hemolysis 0011% to 0.341%, pH 7.54 to 6.70, sodium 1726/L to 157.3 mmole/L, potassium 3.45 mmole/L to 29.28 mmole/L, osmolarity 0 0.
to 0:339 osmol/kg and all blood bags were steriled. Properties of blood stored in both blood bags (TB and IB) are not significant difference (p > 0.05) and percentage of hemolysis of blood stored in TB is less than 0.8% at day 35. This existing data support the previous studies that blood storage in anticoagulant CPDA-1 solution extended the permissible red blood cell storage up to 35 The
studies report here confirmed the same quality of TB and IB which indicate that blood stored for 35 days in CPDA-1 TB can be used in routine transfusion.
