Abstract

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is abnormalities of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow leading to ineffective hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. Clinical manifestations include a decrease in the number and quality of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Currently, treatment of MDS include palliative treatment, hematopoietic stem cell transplant and chemotherapy for control the disease or relieve symptoms. Azacitidine is commonly to use for MDS in Golden Jubilee Medical Center. When chemotherapy drugs inject into patient, it may cause many side effects to the patient because chemotherapy kill fast-growing cells such as Bone marrow suppression, Nausea, Vomiting, injection site reactions, injection site bruising erythema and pain.  Side effects depends on the type of chemotherapy drug, dose of chemotherapy drug and condition of the patient prior to receiving hemotherapy drugs. Nurses must have an important role to care for the patients to relieve side effects, reduce complications, continue treatment and increase the quality of life as much as possible. The authors have foreseen the importance of these. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to review the knowledge of MDS and nursing care of MDS patients receiving chemotherapy.
