Abstract:
A 1 year and 9 months-old boy presented with persistent metabolic acidosis after acute
gastroenteritis, anemia and malnutrition. A diagnosis of distal renal tubular acidosis was made based
on the serum and urine electrolyte results and radiograph finding of rickets and nephrocalcinosis.
Peripheral blood smear showed a Southeast Asian Ovalocytosis phenotype. After alkali therapy, the
patient had weight gain and the metabolic acidosis and anemia improved. Coexisting SAO should
be searched for as a potential cause of anemia in patients with distal renal tubular acidosis.
