Abstract:
This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-storage filtration by the use
of leukocyte reduction filters for red cells, Sepacell R-500(II) Baxter USA and Sepacell RZ-200B1 Asahi
Medical Japan. In 2002-2003 Sepacell R-500(II) was used to remove leukocyte from 149 units of adsol
red cells and red cells. The mean of WBC removal was 99.982%, residual WBC 0.58X106 cells/unit and
RBC recovery 88.2%. The mean time for filtration was 20.40 minutes. In 2003 Sepacell RZ-200B1 was
used to remove leukocyte from 65 units of whole blood, adsol red cells and red cells. The mean of WBC
removal was 99.99%, residual WBC 0.28X106 cells/unit and RBC recovery 91.13%. The mean time for
filtration was 13.28 minutes. Leukocyte - reduced red cells received from the two filters reached standard
value and we found that Sepacell RZ-200B1 was significantly better in WBC removal with more
RBC recovery than Sepacell R-500 (II). In addition Sepacell RZ-200B1 had taken shorter time for filtration
shorter than Sepacell R-500 (II).
