Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to follow-up the donors who were over 60 years old in order to review their health status, donor adverse reactions and post-donation complications. Including the eligibility to continually donate blood and passing regular donor selection criteria. In addition, complete blood count (CBC) and serum ferritin (SF) level were determined as they came for the follow-up or blood donation. The study records were collated and analyzed during the period of Jan 4-Dec 31, 2011. Result: A total of 671 donors age between 60-70 years old were included in this study. There were 478 male and 193 female donors with the average times of donation for males and females were 74 and 41 respectively. The average time after last donation to the first donation after 60 years of age was 1 year. The mean of SF, RBC, Hb, MCV, MCH, WBC, Plt and RDW for males were 118.11 mg/L, 4.76 M/mL, 14.23 g/dL, 89.90 fL, 30.39 pg, 6.39 K/mL, 226.92 K/mL and 13.39%, for females were 87.42 mg/L, 4.40 M/mL, 13.00 g/dL, 88.36 fL, 29.62 pg, 6.60 K/mL, 274.58 K/mL and 13.23%, respectively. Number of elderly/total donor at NBC was 0.20%. Units from elderly/total units of NBC was 0.18% in 2011. They successfully donated blood without any adverse reactions. Discussion and Conclusion: The elderly blood donors who regularly donate blood are healthy and altruistic persons. They felt valuable and gained self-esteem when they were able to donate blood after 60 years of age to save patient,s life and this will encourage them to take good care of their healths. Their advocacy on blood donation would spread widely among their families, relatives and friends to become the new blood donors or to return back for blood donation after 60 years of age. In the future. The donor care program should be able to expand to cover other aspects of blood donation problem.
