Knowledge, Attitude and Behaviour of Health Care Personnel towards Management of Vaccine and Cold Chain in National Health Security Office Zone 4-Saraburi

Abstract

The aims of this survey were to investigate knowledge, attitude and behaviours towards vaccine and cold chain management of health care professionals, and explore relationships among the variables. A validated questionnaire was used to survey the health care professionals (n=677) from eight provinces (Nakhonnayok, Nonthaburi, Pathumthani, Angthong, Singburi, Lopburi, Saraburi and Ayutthaya) between March and June, 2011. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test and Spearman’s rank correlation at the level .05. Findings showed that 87% of respondents were in sub-district health promotion hospitals. The mean duration of working experience on health care of respondents was 17 years. On average, those who were directly responsible for vaccine management worked for 9 years. The mean score of knowledge about vaccine and cold chain management was 10.20 (SD 1.98, range 1-15). The means score of their attitude and behaviours were 77.65 (SD 6.98, range 53-90) and 44.56 (SD 4.15, range 33-51) respectively. There were statistically significant positive relationships among knowledge, attitude and behaviours at the level .05. Additionally, the findings revealed that some knowledge and behaviours urgently needed to be improved, such as an appropriate use of icepack, and monitoring temperature at storage and transportation.
