Explanatory model of chronic kidney disease in perspective of patient

Abstract

Introduction: The explanatory model represent the meaning of illness, depends on patient’s belief and experience. The objective of this study was to determine the explanatory model of chronic kidney disease (consisting of perceptions of kidney, etiology, severity and treatment) and images of patients with chronic kidney disease in perspective of patients. Material and method: This study used qualitative method. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 30 chronic kidney disease patients during May till July 2011. In-depth interview was used to elicit data form key informants. Result: Patient perceived the information of chronic kidney disease by own beliefs and their past experience of disease. Most patients perceived choice of treatment by palliative treatment. The belief of patient about their medication is can slow down their chronic kidney disease progression. From the data obtained it was found that the image of chronic kidney disease patients had change. Since chronic kidney disease was diagnosed. The patients could not engage in their occupations. The negative images impact their daily life particularly on the acceptance form society and the profession. Conclusion: The explanatory model of chronic kidney disease were found base on experience and belief, although they all information about the disease form health care providers. The difference of explanatory models between physicians and patients is the significant factor causing unsuccessful therapeutic outcomes in the long run.
