Video Counseling: Reviewing the literature and implications for applications in Thailand’s context
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic until now, video counseling has been rapidly booming worldwide. In this article, the author consequently reviews academic literature, gathers relevant knowledge and empirical insights related to video counseling from reliable sources, for the benefits of key stakeholders.
Content: A substantial amount of scientific research demonstrates that video counseling has no significant difference in satisfaction, effectiveness, and therapeutic alliance, compared to face-to-face counseling. In addition, it reduces social stigma against individuals with mental illness and provides those who have limitations, with convenient and comprehensive access to counseling services. Hence, 2024 “APA Guidelines for the Practice of Telepsychology”, which are recommendations in accordance with 2017 “APA Standards and Code of Conduct' as well as Thailand’s first “Counseling Psychologist Professional Ethics” in 2024 have been revised and published. The essence of every issue emphasizes the expertise of psychologists, the informed consent process and cybersecurity. When applying them to practice of video counseling, in conjunction with applicable laws in Thailand; for example, Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (PDPA); it will further enhance the service quality.
Conclusion: Video Counseling is an effective modality; it is appropriate for individuals who have common mental health issues, without having aggressive and violent behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to promote basic digital literacy, legal and ethical considerations of video counseling services among Thai psychologists that stride towards meeting international standards in the future.
