Factors Related to Suicidal Behavior at Sansai Hospital Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

Objective: To identify the factors related to suicidal behavior. Among the suicide attempt patients and committed suicide patients at Sansai Hospital, Chiang Mai Province.


Materials and methods: A retrospective descriptive study of suicide attempted and committed suicide patients at Sansai Hospital during October 1, 2017 – September 30, 2020. The data were reviewed from medical records and the suicide surveillance report (report 506 DS). All data were analyzed by descriptive statistical method. The related factors were analyzed by Simple Logistic regression statistics and significantly related factors were analyzed by Multiple logistic regression.


Result: Most of the attempted suicide were female, aged less than 30 years old, single, worked in agriculture or manual labor, have depression as an underlying disease. Most of them were first to attempt suicide and usually caused by relationship problems and drug overdose or chemical ingestion was the number one common method. Most of the committed suicides were male, aged over 50 years old, married, worked in agriculture or manual labor, chronic disease. The most evidence affecting suicide was relationship problems and the most common method was hanging. Factors affecting suicidal behavior were gender, age, marital status, occupation, chronic disease, and method of suicide. It is found that aged over 50 years old and Hanging were statistically significantly associated with committed suicide (95%CI+2.48-51.76, p-value=0.002 and 95%CI=9.81-133.58, p-value<0.001, respectively).


Conclusion: Aged over 50 years old and Hanging was the related factors to committed suicide.
