Abstract

Objective: This research was aimed to compare visits to the psychiatrist before the appointment due to recurrent symptoms of schizophrenic patients in the psychiatric department of Jainadnarendra Hospital using Pharmacy mental status examination (PMSE) and normal evaluation (mental status examination).

Materials and methods: This research was a quasi – experimental study. The sample group for this study consisted of 126 schizophrenia patients at the Out-Patient Department, Jainadnarendra Hospital during January - June 2018.  The tools for the study included personal data record sheet, PMSE and data analysis was performed by using frequency, percentage, Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test.

Results: The three time evaluation of symptoms of schizophrenic patients by using PMSE compared with normal evaluation (mental status examination) showed that the normal evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 0.79% and PMSE evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 8.73% after the first evaluation. In The second evaluation, the normal evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 0.79% while PMSE evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 7.94%. After the third evaluation, normal evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 0.79% whereas PMSE evaluation suggested medication adjustment in 7.94%.When identifying the relation of evaluation methods of schizophrenic patients by using normal method and PMSE and meeting with the physician upon recurrence prior to the appointment date, the PMSE method and meeting with the physician prior to the appointment date due to the recurrence were found to be significantly related in statistic way at 0.01.

Conclusion: Using PMSE is able to evaluate visits to the psychiatrist before the appointment due to recurrent symptoms of schizophrenic patients more closely than the normal evaluation.
