Factors Affecting Suicidality among Patients with Chronic Illness at the Outpatient Department in Maechai Hospital, Phayao Province

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the factors affecting suicidality among patients with chronic illness at the outpatient department , Maechai Hospital.
Method: This was an unmatched case-control study conducted with patients with chronic illness The sample was divided into a case group of 75 patients with risk of suicide and a control group of 450 patients without risk of suicide. They were selected by simple sampling. Data were statistically analyzed in terms of frequency distribution and percentage. Chi-square tests were used to analyzed odd ratios. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyzed the factors affecting suicidality.
Results: Factors affecting suicidality are old age (age over 65 years) (ORadj =2.85 ;95% CI =1.23-6.40), disability (ORadj =1.92; 95% CI = 1.02-4.09), duration of illness of more than 10 years (ORadj =2.52; 95% = CI 1.33-4.75), and depression (ORadj = 16.47; 95% CI = 8.87-30.57)
Conclusion: The findings suggest that factors affecting suicidality are old age, disability, long duration of illness, and the presence of depression.
