ภาวะช่องปากแคบเป็นภาวะแทรกซ้อนที่พบบ่อยในผู้ป่วยมะเร็งศีรษะและลำคอที่ได้รับการรักษา ด้วยยาเคมีบำบัดร่วมกับรังสีรักษา ผลข้างเคียงจากการรักษาทำให้ต่อมน้ำลาย กล้ามเนื้อที่ใช้ในการเคี้ยว และข้อต่อขากรรไกรสูญเสียความยืดหยุ่น และเกิดพังผืดทำให้เกิดภาวะช่องปากแคบขึ้น ภาวะนี้ส่งผลกระทบ ต่อคุณภาพชีวิตของผู้ป่วยมะเร็งศีรษะและลำคอในระยะยาวทั้งในด้านการรับประทานอาหาร การพูด การรักษาสุขอนามัยช่องปาก และการเข้าสังคม บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อนำเสนอบทบาทของพยาบาล ในการจัดการภาวะช่องปากแคบในผู้ป่วยมะเร็งศีรษะและลำคอที่ได้รับยาเคมีบำบัดร่วมกับรังสีรักษา ประกอบด้วย ความหมายของภาวะช่องปากแคบ กลไกการเกิด การรักษา และบทบาทของพยาบาลในการจัดการ ภาวะช่องปากแคบ บทความนี้เสนอแนะว่าพยาบาลมีบทบาทสำคัญในการคัดกรอง การประเมินภาวะช่องปากแคบ การให้ความรู้และคำแนะนำในปฏิบัติตัวเพื่อการป้องกันภาวะช่องปากแคบ เนื่องจากถ้าผู้ป่วยมีภาวะนี้จะทำให้ การฟื้นฟูสมรรถภาพการอ้าปากให้กลับคืนสู่สภาวะปกติเป็นไปได้ยากลำบาก การป้องกันจึงเป็นกลยุทธ์ที่ส่งเสริม ให้ผู้ป่วยมะเร็งศีรษะและคอมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีขึ้นอย่างยั่งยืนในระยะยาว
