Adaptation to Illness in Patient with Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis at Home-based Environment during Covid-19 Outbreak

This exploratory descriptive qualitative (EDQ) research aimed to study the adaptation of peritoneal dialysis patients in a home environment during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak. Purposive selection of participants was used with 11 CAPD patients at Rajavithi Hospital Bangkok, and one patient's primary caregiver. Data were collected by using in-depth interview and non-participation observation of their home environment via Line Application during May-July 2022. Data were analyzed by using a thematic analysis. Findings of the study revealed the important themes of patients’ coping and adaptation to illness, and home environmental management for dialysis during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak. The coping consisted of learning, information processing, reappraisal, and self-management. Adaptation to illness during Covid 19 consisted of protecting oneself from contracting COVID-19, having difficulty in eating, going to the doctor’s appointment for a checkup even having trouble, and remaining in caring for one’s health condition. The home environment of CAPD patients showed that most of them were in good and fair conditionม even in the situation of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 outbreak. Based on these findings, nurses can use this as the basic information for home visits of patients with CAPD in the home environment during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak via LINE application.
