Development of Mental Health Counseling Handbook for Students with Visual Impairment

Abstract

The purpose of this study was 1) to develop and test the effectiveness of mental health counseling handbook for students with visual impairments, 2) to make comparisons the knowledge of trainees before and after using the mental health counseling handbook and, 3) to study trainees’ opinions on the handbook. The research method was divided in two phases. The first phase was to develop a handbook that followed the 9 steps of R & D to transform educational technology, the tools of this phase consisted of a teacher interview form, a student interview form, and an expert opinion questionnaire.

The results were 1) There was a handbook for mental health counseling to students with visual impairment in normal font and braille, content consists of 5 units; the nature and nature of children with blind students; the mental health problems of visually impaired students; the developmental theories and theories of counseling; the counseling; and guidelines for counseling mental health problems for students with visual impairment, 2) calculate the efficiency of the handbook (E1 / E2) were found that; the handbook was effective in overall, and each sub-unit had a score above the 80/80 threshold. The second phase involved training workshops for 45 trainees using handbook sample, the tools of this phase consisted of, a mental health counseling handbook for students with visual impairment, a knowledge assessment, and a questionnaire, which were analyzed with percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test statistic, and E1/E2. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The trainees showed that the trainee’s posttest score was higher than pretest score with the statistics significance level at .05. 2) Testing the knowledge of the trainees after workshops against the set criteria70 percent, the test result showed that 43 trainees had passed the criteria and 2 people were not qualified with the criteria. And 3) the trainees satisfaction towards the handbook was a high to the highest level.
