Abstract

This historical control study aimed to compare the surgical postponement before and after setting up the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic (PAC) at Mae Sot hospital in Tak province. The sample were 1038 elective surgery patients undergoing the operations etween August 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. They were classified into 2 groups, before and after the setting up the pre-anesthesia clinic. The first group was 401 elective surgery cases before setting up the pre-anesthesia clinic between Augus 2022 to December 2022. The second group was 637 elective surgery cases after setting up the pre-anesthesia clinic between January 2023 to March 2023. The research instrument consisted of the three questionnaires: 1) general data, 2) the assessment and preparation and 3) the specific details describe situations in which surgery could be cancelledThe data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Variable characteristics were compared using the Chi-square test, while the surgical rates between two groups were compared sing the incidence rate ratio.

The research results found that the rate of surgical postponement in the second group was found significantly lower than the first group (0.62 vs 5.74; IRR=9.26 95%CI 6.03-14.67, p<0.001).

Thus, the pre-anesthesia assessment and patient’ s preparations in the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic can help decrease the surgical postponement rate. The outcome assessment in other aspects should be explored such as hospital length of stay and efficiency in utilizing the operating room.
