Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic situation has influenced on educational institutions to adjust their teaching and learning to be online education. This two-group quasi-experimental research, pre-posttest design, aimed to study the effect of applying contemplative education via online education on enhancing self-awareness and learning happiness of the 2nd year nursing students who studied Principles and Techniques in Nursing Practicum and could not practice in clinical settings during pandemic situation related to Corona Virus 2019.  The samples were 48 students divided into control and experimental groups (24 students in each group). Online education was used in the control group while the experimental group received online education combined with a contemplative education. The research instruments developed by the researchers and reviewed by the experts included 1) the online education combined with a contemplative education, 2) the self-awareness questionnaires, and 3) the learning happiness questionnaires. The content validity indexes of them were .83, .70, and .76 respectively. The Cronbach's Alpha Coefficients of the self-awareness questionnaires, and the learning happiness questionnaires were .95 and .83, respectively. Data were collected between 3 May 2021-13 June 2021 and analyzed by using an independent t-test and paired t-test.

The results showed that, after the experiment, the average score of learning happiness of the experimental group was significantly increased at the level of .05 and the average scores of self-awareness and learning happiness of the experimental group and the control group was no statistically significant difference.

The results of this study indicated that the effects of applying contemplative education via online education on enhancing self-awareness and learning happiness in nursing students were not different from conventional online education. Therefore, nursing instructors should continue further study by using contemplative education in other nursing practice subjects that could not practice in clinical settings during the COVID-19 pandemic situation.
