Effects of a Professional Nursing Coaching Program on Competency in Caring for Gynecological Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy

Abstract

This study employed a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. The objective was to examine the effects of a professional nurse coaching program on the competency of nurses caring for gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at Saraburi Hospital, by comparing nurses' competency scores before and after participation in the program. The sample consisted of 9 registered nurses working in the Gynecology-Complicated Obstetrics Ward at Saraburi Hospital. The intervention was implemented over a period of one month. The research instruments comprised: 1) a professional nurse coaching program for the care of gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, developed by the researcher based on the GROW Model, and 2) data collection instruments consisting of a personal data record form and a competency questionnaire for nurses caring for gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, covering three domains: knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Content validity of each domain was evaluated by three experts, yielding Content Validity Index (CVI) values of 0.80, 1.00, and 1.00, respectively. Reliability of each domain was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, yielding values of 0.82, 0.95, and 0.86, respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze general characteristics, and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to compare pre- and post-intervention data.The results revealed that nurses' competency in caring for gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was significantly higher after participation in the coaching program than before, across all three domains — knowledge, skills, and attitudes — at a statistically significant level of .05
