Factors Predicting Care Behaviors for Children with Acute Respiratory Infections among Karen Caregivers

Abstract

This predictive correlational research aimed to examine factors predicting caregiving behaviors for children with acute respiratory infections among Karen caregivers. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 107 Karen caregivers of children who received services in the outpatient and inpatient departments of a secondary hospital. Research instruments included 1) A demographic record form, 2) a knowledge questionnaire on acute respiratory infections, 3) a perceived susceptibility questionnaire, 4) a perceived severity questionnaire, 5) a perceived benefits of treatment and prevention questionnaire, 6) a perceived barriers questionnaire, and 7) a care behavior for children with acute respiratory infections questionnaire. The reliability of the instruments were .81, .73, .74, .72, .74, and .81 respectively. Data were collected from October to September 2024. Descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis were employed for data analysis. The results revealed that Karen caregivers demonstrated an overall score of care behaviors at a good level (x̄= 76.72, S.D. = 8.55). Perceived benefits of treatment and prevention and perceived susceptibility were able to predict caregiving behaviors for children with acute respiratory infections among Karen caregivers, accounting for 89.9% of the variance (R 2 = .898, p < .001). Perceived benefit was the best predictor (β =.524, p < .001) followed by perceived susceptibility (β = .221, p < .01). These findings suggested that health care providers should promote perceived benefits and perceived susceptibility for Karen caregivers in order to improve more appropriate caregiving behaviors for children with acute respiratory infections.
