The Influence of Job Characteristic and Happiness on Quality of Working Life of Professional Nurses in a University Hospital

Abstract
The predictive research aimed to explore the level of job characteristics, happiness, and quality of work life among professional nurses in a university hospital. Additionally, it also attempted to investigate the influence of job characteristics and happiness that affect the quality of work life of professional nurses. This study employed quantitative research design. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Stratified Sampling was applied in selecting the samples. This research recruited 145 professional nurses who had worked at a university hospital and have working experiences at least 6 months. The questionnaire was divided into four sections, which were 1) demographic data 2) the Job Characteristic level of profession nurses 3) the Happiness of profession nurses and 4) the Quality of Working Life. The questionnaire was tested for validity and reliability. The content validity of the questionnaire was 0.50 – 1.00, respectively. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficients of questionnaires were 0.89, 0.88, and 0.96, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, standard deviation), Pearson’s product moment correlation and multiple regression analysis.The results revealed that the Job Characteristics of the professional nurses in a university hospital was at high level (X- =4.41 SD =.46). The Happiness and the Quality of Work Life of professional nurses in the university hospital were at medium level (X- = 3.32, S.D. = .32) and (X- = 3.42, S.D. =.61), respectively. Resulted in the Happiness and Job Characteristics can predict quality of working life of professional nurses in the university hospital which accounted for 41.8 (R2 = .418, p < .01)Recommendation from this study : Nurse organization should have the policy that improved the level of quality in working life among professional nurses such as creating the professional nurses happiness, balanced between a work time and privacy time, planning appropriated workforce and workload, and enhancing the autonomy and freedom in nurses, which helped professional nurses had a good quality of working life.
