Abstract

This study was quasi-experimental research designed. The purpose of this research is to investigate
the effects of a breathing exercise program that involves self-efficacy training on pulmonary function and quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The participants were people aged 35-59 years old and they have all been diagnosed with COPD and are receiving treatment at
either a COPD clinic in Wang-thong hospital, Phitsanuloke province. There were selected by stratified random
sampling. 60 participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group, 30 for each group. The experimental group received breathing exercises that involves self-efficacy training, adapted from Bandura’s concept of self-efficacy while the control group received a conventional advisory intervention. The study duration was 12 weeks. Research instrument were conducted as questionnaires divided into two parts: pulmonary function record form and St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire for COPD Patients [SGRQ-C]. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to test reliability of the health-related quality of life
questionnaire and a value of .86. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, Paired
t-test, Wilcoxon Signed - Rank test and Mann – Whitney U test.
The results of study were as follows: 1) After receiving the program, the experimental group had
higher mean pulmonary function than before and higher than the control group with a statistical significance
(p < .05). 2) After receiving the program, the experimental group had better mean score on quality of life
than before and better than the control group with a statistical significance (p <.05). The results of this study
suggest that community nurse practitioner should continuously promote breathing exercise by enhancing
Self-efficacy for COPD patients.
