The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of a social support before cardiac catheterization program on anxiety and readiness among patients with coronary artery disease. The sample were patients with coronary heart disease undergoing cardiac catheterization who were admitted to the Cardiology Ward at Naresuan University Hospital, Phitsanulok, Thailand. A total of 50 patients were recruited, 25 patients were assigned into the control group, who received routine nursing care, and 25 patients were assigned into the experimental group, who received the social support before cardiac catheterization program. The research instruments were the social support before cardiac catheterization program, anxiety assessment form for cardiac catheterization and readiness assessment form for cardiac catheterization. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic, paired t-test, and independent t-test.
The findings showed that the patients’ anxiety in the intervention group after receiving the social support before cardiac catheterization program was significantly lesser than before receiving the program (p<.001) and less than those in the control group (p<.001). The patients’ readiness in the intervention group after receiving the Social Support Before Cardiac Catheterization Program was significantly higher than before receiving the program (p<.001) and higher than those in the control group (p<.001). The research showed that the Social Support Before Cardiac Catheterization Program can be applied in providing care of patients with coronary heart disease undergoing cardiac catheterization to decrease their anxiety and to promote their readiness for cardiac catheterization.
