THE ACQUISITION OF DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF BEING A GOOD PERSON AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY, SALAYA CAMPUS, NAKHON PATHOM PROVINCE

The purposes of this study were: 1) to study the level of desirable characteristics of being a good person among undergraduate students at Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province; 2) to compare desirable characteristics of being a good person among undergraduate students at Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province, as classified by sex, faculty, admission method, academic achievement, living status and family status. 3) to study viewpoints and practices of undergraduate students who were granted the Award of Desirable Characteristics in order to achieve the desirable characteristics of being a good person. This study applied both quantitative and qualitative research methods. With regard to the quantitative method, samples were 352 undergraduate students of Mahidol University at Salaya, Nakhon Pathom Province. As for students having the Award, samples were 10 students that allowed the interview for the qualitative part. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were implemented, with data analysis using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and content analysis.The results found that :
1. The acquisition of desirable characteristics of being a good person among undergraduate students at Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province remained at the moderate level.
2. Different faculties, admission methods, living status and family status contributed similar desirable characteristics whereas different sexes and academic achievement were related to different levels of desirable characteristics, with a significance difference at 0.05
3. Viewpoints and practices in order to have characteristics that defined a good person included four aspects: 1) diligence meant being prepared, planning and setting goals decidedly, and assessing practices. All these activities were seriously carried out along with regular study and proper time management for maximum productivity; 2) tolerance meant having careful consideration of Dos and Don’ts, responsibility and tireless attempt, staying calm in irregular situation, being self-disciplined and assessing weaknesses for improvement; 3) achievement motivation included graduation, having a secured job and filial

piety, pursuing higher education, setting goals, assessing work performance and learning new things and; 4) viewpoints and practices for achievement included having role model, support from family, good family relationship and support from the university in activities and facilities as well as having the university’s attention to students’ voices.
