Abstract

Rationale: Marathon can cause injury and resulte in the accumulation of injuries which become chronic musculoskeletal problems and declination of competitive ability. Currently, competition of marathon in Thailand is increased but none of the study reported about incidence of injury from the competition.

Objective: To investigate the incidence of injury in tradition marathon competition of Bangkok, Thailand

Method: The study surveyed incidence of injury from the participants who admitted in the tradition marathon competition of Bangkok, Thailand. Participants gave their information about demographic, competition, and musculoskeletal injury. The data from survey were analyzed with descriptive statistics.

Results: Participants was 1,331 respondents, mean age was 32.93 ± 11.11 years. They were divided into marathon, half-marathon, quarter, and walk and run for health for 10.4, 41.8, 29.4, and 18.3%, respectively. The study found that 31.2% of respondents had musculoskeletal injuries. Areas of injury in order from the most to the least were presented at the knee and ankle, calf, thigh, lower back, hip, shoulder and arm.
