THE ACUTE EFFECTS OF PENCIL PUSH UP TRAINING ON EYES ACCOMMODATION CONVERGENCE SYSTEM IN HEALTHY UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Abstract

    This study was to assess the acute effects of accommodation convergence training using Pencil push-up training (PPT) for 10 minutes on the amplitude of accommodation (AA), accommodation facility (AF), and near point of convergence (NPC) in university students. Twenty-eight healthy collegiate students ages between 18 to 25 were separated into two groups, student eyes training (ST, n=14: 7 males and 7 females) and student's eyes untraining (SU, n=14: 1 male, and 13 females). The ST performed Pencil push-up program for ten minutes whereas the SU was instructed to relax their eyes for 10 minutes, the values of AA and NPC were measured using the Royal Air Force Rule (RAF rule), and the value of AF was measured using a ±2.00 flipper lens. All parameters were assessed before and after 10 min of the program. The results showed that when pre- and post-PTT training were compared, the ST group showed significant improvements in AA, AF, and NPC (P < 0.05). Whereas there was no difference for all parameters in the SU. In conclusion, the 10 minutes pencil push-up can affect the accommodation convergence in university students, such as the amplitude of accommodation, the accommodation facility, and the convergence of near points. Therefore, this training program highly recommends for people and students who are interested in exercising or relaxing their eyes during short-term study or work. Also, for the athlete who plays a specific type of sport that needed eyes focusing on different distances such as racket sports players.
